Throwback Festival KS3 ๐Ÿ”™

Get ready to rewind the clock and play for fun at the Throwback Festival! This event is a brilliant opportunity for pupils to get active and experience classic, traditional school games in an inclusive, non-pressured environment. Weโ€™re on a mission to build social connections and revive timeless playground favourites like axe throwing, crown green bowling, tug-of-war, tag games and kerbie. Itโ€™s all about rediscovering the pure joy of movement, encouraging team spirit, and creating unforgettable memories on the field. Bring your energy and letโ€™s play!

Objective: To increase physical activity levels and social connection among pupils by using classic, traditional playground sports to build teamwork, confidence, and positive attitudes toward movement.

Intent: Promote lifelong enjoyment of physical activity through accessible play

Target Audience: Each school is invited to nominate mixed-gender teams of 8 to 10 pupils from KS3 who lack confidence and participate less regularly in organised school sports.

Please select pupils who:

  • Do not typically represent the school in traditional competitive fixtures.
  • Enjoy casual physical activity and playground games over structured sports.
  • Are capable of working well as part of a team.
  • Will represent the school with enthusiasm, maturity, and respect.
  • Are excited to try retro physical challenges and encourage their peers.

Event Format:

  • Pupils will compete in a retro-style carousel featuring traditional activities such as axe throwing, crown green bowling, tug-of-war, tag games and kerbie.
  • Stations emphasise cooperative play, simple strategies, and inclusive participation.
  • Every activity is designed for high engagement fun.
  • All necessary traditional game equipment will be provided.

Logistics:

  • Pupils should arrive in school PE kit and trainers.
  • Schools are responsible for their own transport and supervision.
  • Please arrive 15 minutes prior to start time to register your team.
  • Water only โ€“ no energy drinks or juice.

Key Outcomes:

  • Renewed enthusiasm for everyday active play and traditional games.
  • Stronger peer relationships and enhanced teamwork skills.
  • A boost in individual confidence in an accessible, low-pressure setting.
